Bathroom Facelift

I’ve lived in many kinds of spaces. And most of those had small bathrooms. Over the years, I’ve learned hacks that expand bathroom storage and small accessories that can really liven up the space.

Bathrooms often get overlooked because well, it’s a bathroom. We use whatever small trash can we have. We use those age-old disgusting toilet brush holders. Eewww! Items are tossed helter skelter into drawers.

We spend a lot of time in the bathroom. And since we’d really like to minimize the amount of time we spend in there, it’s worthwhile to be thoughtful about storage and pay attention to small decorative details that can make a big difference. A nice acrylic cosmetics organizer and a nice towel rack are little ways to bring joy to an other mundane space. It’s actually healthier for you to feel relaxed when taking care of business in the bathroom.

I think of the bathroom as a mini spa. No matter what’s going on out in the world, a relaxing bath with aromatic bath salts can rejuvenate the spirit. I am always grateful for water when I take a shower. A shower and a good loofah can wash away negative feelings from a tough day. Don’t underestimate the impact that thoughtful bathroom details can have.

I’ve gathered some items that will help you get organized or elevate a standard item that you may have acquired years ago or that came with your rental. There are big and little ways to create change and hopefully this post inspires you.

Whoever invented carts on wheels should get the Nobel Peace Prize. Sometimes the cart will stay in the same spot, but the wheels allow easy access for cleaning. Sometimes, the cart is kept in a corner and wheeled out when the contents are needed. What a concept!

Acrylic drawers have a clean, light modern feel. They hold makeup, makeup tools, cotton balls, etc. I like the look and feel of acrylic. Somehow, they feel like a luxury item.... like something a movie star would have. Caution: If you use acrylic drawers then you need to keep them neat and you'll need to give some thought to how items are placed inside the drawers.

Waste baskets become a decor item. Who would have guessed??!! They come in a wide range of colors, shapes and textures. Waste baskets are no longer trashy. A stylish garbage can kick the bathroom up a notch.

Stacking shelves are a must in the bathroom where shelf space is usually at a premium. They keep personal items close at hand without using a lot of real estate.

I have always liked slender glass shelves in the bathroom. They hold practical and decorative things. In the bottom right there's a vintage compote dish that holds small face cloths. I use soft, cotton baby washcloths for my face. They’re small, take up very little room. I like using a small cloth just once, as opposed to those fat, plush washcloths designed for multiple use. Even before COVID, I never shared my facecloths.
